Carlos Pride: A Sonic Journey Through Time and Culture
Introduction:
Embark on the rhythmic journey of Carlos Pride, a versatile musician, record producer, composer, DJ, instrument maker, and the visionary founder of Rhythm Testament Productions Inc.
Early Beginnings:
Carlos' musical odyssey commenced at the age of five when his mother gifted him a guitar and a set of drums. His youth became a canvas of exploration, where guitars, drums, bongos, and African thumb pianos became the instruments through which he discovered the language of rhythm.
Formative Years:
In his early teens, Carlos delved into formal music education under the guidance of Fred White of Earth Wind and Fire and later continued his studies at the American Conservatory of Music. However, it was in 1985, during his time at the Conservatory, that he encountered the transformative influence of Midawo Gideon Foli Alorwoyie, a master drummer from Accra, Ghana. This meeting marked the introduction to the African Talking Drum and laid the foundation for the birth of "Rhythm Testament."
Rhythm Testament and Beyond:
Inspired by the rhythmic possibilities unveiled by Gideon and fellow master drummer Abubakari Lunna, Carlos founded "Rhythm Testament" to fuse ancestral rhythms with modern urban music. His dedication to preserving and evolving musical traditions led him to share his knowledge as a percussion instructor at the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians School of Music in Chicago and later in various New York City public schools.
Musical Collaborations:
Carlos Pride's professional journey has been punctuated with collaborations with a diverse array of artists, including the late Valerie Wellington, Buddy Guy, Nona Hendricks, George Clinton, and many more. His experiences span television, film, video and record production, allowing him to share his musical vision with the world.
Educational Initiatives:
Beyond his performances, Carlos has been a catalyst for musical education, creating drum programs in Chicago and New York City schools. His impact extends to the Rhythm Testament Non-Profit where he has brought the healing power of rhythm to children facing mental health challenges.
Sound Therapy Advocate:
In recent years, Carlos Pride has delved into the realm of Sound Therapy, recognizing the profound impact of sound on overall health and conscious development. Collaborating with Dr. Albert Gunn, he crafted the album "MEDITATIONS," aimed at guiding audiences through a therapeutic soundscape.
Legacy and Future:
As the founder of Rhythm Testament Productions Inc., Carlos Pride's legacy continues to grow. From recording studios in New York City to worldwide collaborations, he remains a torchbearer of rhythm, a creator of therapeutic musical experiences.
Carlos Pride's life is a testament to the transformative power of music, education, and cultural fusion. His commitment to preserving ancestral rhythms while embracing contemporary sounds continues to inspire and shape the world of music.
